It was a whole lot more complicated than anything else I've painted before. And, when seen from a distance, it actually looks good! (Don't click to zoom)
One thing that nags me about the painting is the ugliness of the big gray bridge on the left side of the painting. When I have no details to paint and I simply have to cover large amounts of paper with paint, it comes out looking really bad. Dang!
Below is a warm-up painting I did the night before. I feel like I lost something good between this one and the final (specifically, the clouds, the contrast between the clouds and sky near the top right, and the lowest bold cloud strokes), but if given the choice, I would save the final version from a fire rather than this one.

wow really nice sunsets from japan.
ReplyDeletethat's a little funny right, sun sets everyday and yet you don't get to see such beautiful skies often [especially in Hong Kong, that's what I think]
=D
Hey, same here in Tokyo. I only get to see them sunsets on the rare occasions I get to travel outside of Tokyo.
ReplyDeleteis that a duck i see on your sketchbook in one of the pics? :D
ReplyDeletelol nice
ReplyDeletethe thumbnail version look pretty impressive
constructive criticism: use more tones on the reflections in the water
i like the umbrella the best
overall 9/10 stars
Wow buddy,
ReplyDeleteyour work is getting better and better the frist time i saw your blog you had some cartoon thing going on, which was cool too but its nice to see you working on other projects aswell its kindna refreshing. For your bridge you should try shadeing with tones of diff color just because the bridge is one shade of gray does not mean you have to paint it as you see it. Try mixing deep blue or sparking black, because of the sun seting the light rays may hit the bridge casting off strange colour of such. But hey its your painting do what you want if it was up to me i would paint it rainbow colour just for the heck of it:) <3
oh wow! I really like that painting! Its really beautiful. Here in LA we tend to get a lot of those sunsets. I never get tired of them :]
ReplyDeleteMan you have talent dude go become one of those street artists and stop coming to school! you're wasting ur talent dude
ReplyDeletemaybe Valve's looking for a new 16 years old half American half Japanese Comic-obsessed hat-loving kid
